Search And Display Spending Diverge In Bad Economy
Traditional media is suffering in the current downturn/recession. For example, US print newspaper revenues were down 16 percent in the second quarter, compared with a year ago. Online (and Outdoor) are really the only media segments that are growing or holding their own (maybe TV). However, the Wall Street Journal reported yesterday about a divergence between paid search and online display advertising and the relative fortunes of the companies that rely on each for their revenues.

I Don't Get The Microsoft TV Ad But I Like It
Everyone is talking about the new Microsoft TV ad featuring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld. paidContent.org called the ad pretty pathetic, Sam Diaz didn't get it, nor did I. TechCrunch got word from Microsoft that the ad is triggered to "engage consumers" and "spark conversation," which I guess it is doing.

Cleaning Up the Retail Site Navigating Mess
In recent years, many retailers have implemented powerful attribute-based (a.k.a. faceted) navigation systems that make it easier for customers to filter, sort, navigate, and buy from a retailer's inventory. Most of Netconcepts' clientele who have implemented these technologies report good results, increased conversion and sales. From the natural search perspective, many such marketers are pleasantly surprised to find increases in the number of their pages indexed by Google upon implementing such systems. But in this case, what's good for users, is actually not so good for search engines -- or for your bottom line.

Video Search Engine RedLasso Runs Afoul Of The Law
In early Internet days, circa 1996, I had a memorable phone conversation with a webmaster who had put up a site that violated our client's trademark. The webmaster told me, gently, as if speaking the obvious to a child, that "You don't understand man. You're talkin' about law. This is the internet. The law doesn't apply to the internet". Of course he was wrong. We sent a cease and desist order and they ceased and desisted. Now, the saga of RedLasso once again shows that law does indeed apply to the internet.

More On adCenter UK Promotion & Free Search Ads
Yesterday I reported based on a MarketingWeek Online story that Microsoft was running a promotion to give away a free month of search ads. Microsoft told me the story was wrong and promised to send me more information. I now have that information, so let me share with you the program.
UK advertisers will soon be incentivized to migrate their Google AdWords campaigns to adCenter campaigns. The program consists of different level promotions based on several factors that I cannot disclose. Each segment gets a different level of support and a different amount of free adCenter ads.
